Day 1 of the PIAA AA State Wrestling Tournament is done for today. The AA wrestlers will start back up tomorrow at 9:00am with the quarterfinals and consolation round 2. The top 5 teams in the team race are: 1. Notre Dame-GP (41.5), 2. Saucon Valley (33), 3. Chestnut Ridge (26), 4. Brookville (20.5), and Faith Christian Academy (19). There were no major upsets today, but plenty of great matches. Most of the matches, in the quarterfinals tomorrow morning, should be good. Here are a few of the more interesting matchups:
113 Brandon Wentzel (Montoursville) who took 3rd at 106 last year will wrestle Hunter Robison (Saegertown) who took 5th at 106 last year. They wrestled at States last year with Robison winning 3-1 in SV.
120 Jaden Pepe (Wyoming Area)-1st last year at 113 takes on Cooper Hornack (Burrell)-2nd at 106 last year.
132 Owen Reinsel (Brookville)-4th at 120 last year will take on Ethan Kolb (Benton)-7th last year at 120.
152 Jackson Arrington (Forest Hills)-1st last year at 132 will wrestle Michael Duggan (Boiling Springs)-3rd last year at 152. Jackson is on another level, but this might be the closest match of his tournament.
172 Rune Lawrence (Frazier)-1st last year at 172 takes on Nolan Lear (Benton)-3rd last year at 160. I think this has a chance to be Rune's toughest match in his quest to repeat.
District 6 AA still has 20 wrestlers in the tournament. There are 11 in the quarterfinals and 9 in the consolation round 2. The quarterfinals for D6 are highlighted by 172 lbs, where three D6 wrestlers made the quarterfinals. These 3 are Gavin Stewart (Marion Center), Suds Dubler (Glendale), and Caleb Close (Bald Eagle Area). At 113, two wrestlers Landon Bainey (West Branch) and Lucas Fye (Bald Eagle Area) made the quarterfinals. The top D6 AA teams are Bald Eagle Area-6th Place 17.5 points, Forest Hills-18th place 12.5 points, and Glendale-19th place 12 points. Here is a recap and preview of the 20 wrestlers left in the PIAA AA State Tournament.
